As Brayden Grows...

2nd quarter Status..

Well  we have ventured well into chapter 3-Working with parallel Lines and Planes.  We have just had our first quiz on Sections 3.1-3.3, and everyone did pretty well.  We have also finished the section on angles of a triangle and had a compeptition to work some triangle problems.

Now we are starting polygons and how to reason inductively.  These next two sections will finish up Chapter Three. Our Chapter Three Test will be either next Tuesday 11/11 or Wednesday 12/11, just depending on how far we get this week.  Be prepared for that coming up!

If you have any questions or problems with the material that has been covered please ask me for extra help and we can arrange some time for that! :)

Another good website we will be working with...

Test and Quiz Update

You will have a quick quiz assesing your understanding of Special Pairs of Angles (2.4) on Tuesday 10/7.
It will be very similar to the type of problems on your homework for the weekend.

Also your chapter two test will be Tuesday October 14th before the first quarter ends. We have two more sections to cover in chapter two and then we will spend a day or so reviewing before our test.

Helpful site!

http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/geometry-help.html

This site has different topics in geometry...the one we are studying now is special pairs of angles. If you are having problems understanding check this site out for extra help. Also there is a cool video under the link "Find the Angle" Problems that just may show up as a bonus on the next test!!!

Update

We have been busy in geometry getting a grasp on solving proofs. This skill takes a lot of brain power and the ability to reason logically. We just had a quiz on sections 2.1-2.3. Overall the grades were mostly A's and B's...way to go!

Now that we have had our quiz we are ready to move onto the last three sections. Today (10/1) we will start special pairs of angles with a masking tape activity out in the hallway. We then have two more sections in chapter 2. Our next test will either be the end of next (10/10) week or the beginning of the next.

I may post a bonus on my blog for the next test...so stay tuned to for hints.

Helpful sites

The web is always a helpful place to look for resources.  There are numerous websites out there with geometry help.  I have even found geometry video lessons on YouTube.  If you are having a hard time with a concept then just google that concept and thousands of entries should be found.  A concept may make more sense to you after you have heard about it in class and then looked it up online.  Here are a couple sites that I have used and found helpful.

First Day

The first couple of weeks in Geometry we will be practicing Divergent Thinking Skills and "thinking outside of the box." Geometry problem solving often comes by looking at problems in a different way and not by narrow thinking. We will also start Chapter 1 Thursday and start examining points, lines, planes, and angles. We will be doing several different activities and will have a quiz the second week of school.

Assignments:
-Get Syllabus signed-Due Tues 8/26
-Book Covered-Due Tues 8/26
-Have binder set up by Tues 8/26
-Applied Creativity Sheet due Thurs 8/21

The Quiz will be on points, lines, and planes and will probably be Tuesday or Wednesday (8/26 or 8/27).

About Me

Background: I grew up in Winston-Salem and attened CBDS as a student from 4th-8th grades. My freshman year in highschool was the first year of Calvary's highschool. I graduated from Mount Tabor and then went on to earn a BS in Middle Grades Science Education from NC State University. GO PACK! I have taught three years with the Winston Salem Forsyth County Public Schools and now gladly welcome the transition to CBDS.

Family: I am married to my highschool sweetheart, Steven Ackley, who is a Youth Assistant at Calvary Baptist Church. He also went to NCSU where he majored in Communication. He is now pursuring his Masters of Divinity in Christian Ministry at Southeastern Seminary. Hopefully he will complete his Masters in December of 2009. We were blessed this June with an addition to our family by welcoming Brayden Garris Ackley! He is such as precious bundle of joy.

Life Verse:Philippians 3:12-14 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

This has been my life verse and encouragement ever since my mom wrote this inside a Bible she gave me after a swim meet.

Did you Know? I was born at halftime of the 1983 NCAA Championship Basketball Game that NSCU went on to win. My doctor and father (an NCSU alumi) were a little wrapped up in the game so they purposely waited to deliver me during halftime! :)

In the Classroom:I enjoy using a variety of instructional strategies such as group work, activities, games, notes, videos, and songs. I enjoy the variety of each day that teaching brings and how it always keeps me on my toes!
